Saturday matinees long ago let us escape from the ordinary world to the island of the Swiss Family Robinson or the mutinous decks of the Bounty. Why not, we thought, escape the usual fare here with Saturday matinees of our favorite photography films?

So we're pleased to present the 168th in our series of Saturday matinees today: Pictures.

Somehow the last day of the year has coincided with our incorrigible habit of presenting a Saturday matinee. So we feel an obligation to deliver something particularly special -- and short.

Fortunately, Gioacchino Petronicce had just the thing.

He calls it Pictures and describes it as a piece about photography and the photographer. "Here, the photographer moves through the space to discover a particular moment. When he finds it, he just pushes the shutter button and ... click!"

The video really does convey in almost a musical way the sense of walking around with a camera, tracking a subject and waiting for just the right moment to take the shot.

Petronicce's video was made from 80,000 of those clicks shot over three years in various cities including Paris, Barcelona, Hossegor, Venezia, Toulouse, Martinique, New York City, Montpellier and others.

But you'd never know unless he told you. They are intimate images, not tourist shots. Something is always going on and Petronicce is chasing it.

The video really does convey in almost a musical way the sense of walking around with a camera, tracking a subject and waiting for just the right moment to take the shot.

It's an approach that will be familiar to all of us, we're sure. But it's nice to see someone else on pins and needles trying to catch just the right moment to fire the shutter.

Which, after all, is what this kind of fun is all about.

We'll say no more and let you enjoy the short but sweet presentation, hoping it inspires another year of creative captures and polished post. Not to mention a few visits to Photo Corners for a laugh or two.

Happy New Year!
