Canon has announced it is now accepting entries for its 2017 New Cosmos of Photography photo competition. the 40th edition of the contest "seeks entries depicting new creative photographic expressions that provide a glimpse of the next frontier," the company said.

The company described the goals of the contest on its site:

The New Cosmos of Photography is Canon's cultural support project to discover, nurture and support new photographers pursuing new possibilities in creative photographic expression. The annual contest, launched in 1991, has been open to the public regardless of the age or nationality of the contestant or the theme, the number or format of entered works. As such, the contest encourages the creative activities that push the boundaries of photography's potential and systematically assists and nurtures award winners by means of exhibitions and published collections of their winning works as well as publicity on the New Cosmos of Photography Web site.

Deadline for submissions is June 8 with the jury meeting in July to choose seven Excellence Award winners and 14 Honorable Mention Award winners. In November a Grand Prize winner will be chosen from among the Excellence Award winners.

Prizes include a Canon dSLR (worth $9,176) and a solo exhibit at the Tokyo Photographic Art Museum. Excellence Award and Honorable Mention Award winners will also receive prize money and the opportunity to display their work at this year's exhibition of winning entries.

Canon Announces Entries are Open for the New Cosmos of Photography Photo Competition

MELVILLE, N.Y. -- Canon U.S.A., Inc., a leader in digital imaging solutions, is excited to announce today that its parent company, Canon Inc., has opened the worldwide submission entry period for its 2017 New Cosmos of Photography (40th edition) photo competition. This year's contest seeks entries depicting new creative photographic expressions that provide a glimpse of the next frontier. Starting in 2015, the contest began to accept digital submissions (both stills and video), to encourage more original forms of photographic expression.

Entries for the New Cosmos of Photography will be accepted between today and June 8 and the Excellence Award Selection Committee will meet in July to choose seven Excellence Award winners and 14 Honorable Mention Award winners. Later, in November, the Grand Prize selection committee is scheduled to meet to select one Grand Prize winner from among the seven Excellence Award-winning entries.

The grand prize winner will receive one million JPY (approximately $9,176), a Canon EOS dSLR camera and the opportunity to hold a solo exhibit at the exhibition of the Tokyo Photographic Art Museum from Oct. 21 to Nov. 12. Additionally, to encourage the continued pursuit of their creative endeavors, 2017 Excellence Award and Honorable Mention Award winners will also receive prize money and the opportunity to display their work at this year's exhibition of winning entries.
