In Freelance Photographers Say These Are the Best Outlets to Pitch, 30 photojournalists interviewed by the Columbia Journalism Review recommended six outlets and their going rates.
The list includes:
- The Washington Post with a day rate of $350
- Harpers' Magazine with rates ranging from $500 to $1,000 a day
- National Geographic at $500 to $650 a day
- CNN with rate of $650 plus $150 for post-production
- The Wall Street Journal at $400 a day plus expenses
- The New York Times at $450 a day
Pay, relationships with editors and respect for photography were all factors. Honorable mentions included Bloomberg Businessweek, Time and AARP. Recommended resources for freelancers included the Alexia Foundation, Getty Images, VSCO Artist Initiative and the Eugene Smith Fund.
