In this recurring column, we highlight a few items we've run across that don't merit a full story of their own but are interesting enough to bring to your attention (with more than 140 characters). This time we look at deadly Mediterranean crossings, Marshall's 'Jazz Festival' images, a Lighting 103 assignment and IIIF images.
- In Desperate Migrants Risk Everything in Deadly Mediterranean Crossings, Alan Taylor presents 26 dramatic images by Getty photographer Chris McGrath who shot aboard the Migrant Offshore Aid Station Phoenix vessel as it patrolled the Mediterranean.
- Leica's announcement of its Jim Marshall set yesterday mentioned the Leica Gallery LA exhibit previewed in 'Jazz Festival' By Legendary Jim Marshall. For a divergent (and diverting) appreciation of Leica's new offering, see Mike Johnston's Sweet Little Lens (And a Leica Solution).
- In Lighting 103: Greg's Assignment, Strobist David Hobby suggests an experiment more than an assignment. "I'd like for you to do a portrait, simple, on black. Light it however you'd like," he writes. And that's just for starters. Shoot it white, then warm, then cool, then dirty, then.... And see which looks "more real."
- Rob Sanderson reports there are now 30,000 Getty Museum Images Published Online as IIIF. IIIF is a framework for publishing digital images, including photographs, "for comparison, manipulation and annotation in a single user interface." The Yale Center for British Art has also released IIIF images today. Here's a demo:
