Photonicz has launched a Kickstarter campaign for the Photonicz One, its compact, weather-sealed LED strobe. Developed by photographer Alex Munoz, the unit can fire as short as 1/50,000 second with an equivalent power output of over 2500Ws. It can also fire up to 30 frames per second at full power with zero recycle time on battery power.

"As a longtime professional photographer, my creative impulses have constantly run up against the technological constraints of traditional strobes, so I went back to the drawing board and created the most advanced lighting solution I could imagine," said Alex Munoz, founder of Photonicz and inventor of Photonicz One. "With the next generation speed, power and unique user controls built into Photonicz One, photographers and filmmakers will find we're opening new creative doors for their work."

The strobe itself measures 4.9x4.7x3.5 inches and weighs 3.3 pounds. Its internal rechargeable battery can fire thousands of full power flashes, up to 30 frames per second, with zero recycle time and as quickly as 1/50,000 second with its native high speed sync of 1/32,000 second. It also accepts Bowens S-type compatible modifiers.

The Photonicz One is controlled by a touchscreen user interface and an app-based remote that include options for TrueTTL (no more simulated preflash), TrueBracket (flash bracketing for HDRs), VariSpeed (extend flash duration to meet the unique needs of an image) and more.

The strobe is compatible with most Canon, Nikon, Fujifilm, Hasselblad, Pentax, Panasonic, Olympus, Phase One and Sony cameras.

Backers of the Kickstarter campaign can get the unit for $749, a significant discount from the $1,499 estimated retail price.

Photonicz Advances Strobe Lighting for Photographers and Filmmakers with Unprecedented Power, Speed and User Control

The photographer-founded startup is launching its flagship Photonicz One next generation strobe on Kickstarter.

LOS ANGELES -- Photonicz, developer of next generation lighting solutions for photographers and filmmakers, has announced the launch of its flagship strobe, Photonicz One, on the crowdfunding site Kickstarter. The technological leap made possible by Photonicz One brings advanced power, speed and never-before-seen control to professional lighting, unlocking new creative potentials for photographers and filmmakers of all skill levels. With backer packages starting at $749, Photonicz One is available for crowdfunding support at: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/photonicz/photonicz-one-the-worlds-first-weather-sealed-led.

Developed by commercial still and motion photographer Alex Munoz, the compact, weather sealed, Photonicz One LED strobe is capable of a flash duration as short as 1/50,000th of a second and an equivalent power output of more than 2500Ws, but it can also fire up to 30 frames per second at full power with zero recycle time and no need for AC outlets. Photonicz One is the first professional grade strobe to incorporate an intuitive touch screen interface and when combined with its app-based remote system, will enable a new world of creative control for photographers. Photonicz One also includes lifetime software updates and the ability to upgrade its hardware to ensure availability of the latest features and compatibility with the newest camera models and making it, possibly, the last system a shooter will need to buy.

The technological advancements incorporated into Photonicz One mean it can go wherever the image-maker finds inspiration and offer never-before-seen tools that put full creative control into the hands of the shooter. Just about every aspect of Photonicz One is making a giant leap beyond traditional strobes, including:

  • Portable & weather sealed: Weight-saving, durable aluminum alloy allows Photonicz One to be the smallest high powered strobe on the market (main body dimensions 4.9x4.7x3.5 inches, weighing only 3.3 pounds) and its unique weather sealing opens up new locations and shooting scenarios never-before possible (like shooting in rain or snowfall, for example).
  • Unprecedented power: This tiny strobe delivers thousands of full power flashes (equivalent to more than 2,500Ws under various conditions) on a single charge, with no need for AC power.
  • App-based touch screen interface: Photonicz One eschews the traditional knobs and buttons for a modern touch screen interface complete with one-touch lighting setups and presets.
  • App-based remote: The Photonicz Remote features an OLED display and built-in light meter that can automatically adjust exposure settings and the PHOTONICZ REMOTE can also connect to Android and iOS phones via an app for even more functionality.
  • Max-range wireless sync: Photonicz One can wirelessly sync from up to a kilometer away and can be triggered individually or as part of a group with more than a hundred strobes at very low latency.
  • Bowens S-type compatible modifiers: Photonicz One is compatible with Bowen S-type mounts, so a simple speed ring swap puts many existing modifiers at a photographer's fingertips.
  • Universal batteries: Powerful long-lasting v-lock batteries can power other gear as well as Photonicz One.
  • Lifetime software and hardware updates: Not only are all app updates totally free, but the modular hardware design will allow Photonicz to offer upgrades to legacy hardware effectively extending the lifetime of Photonicz One indefinitely.

All of these technological advancements are opening new creative opportunities for photographers and filmmakers that have been off limits to traditional strobes. While Photonicz expects to continue to roll out new unique capabilities through its app-based interface, the current version coming to Kickstarter includes numerous world-first functionalities. High profile features include:

  • InstaCharge: Zero recycle time. With Photonicz One's InstaCharge capability, the strobe can fire as quickly as a camera can operate its shutter up to 30 fps with zero recycle time, firing at full power every time.
  • TruePower: Unheard of speeds. Photonicz One offers the world's first TruePower feature allowing photographers to shoot at motion-stopping speeds up to 1/50,000th of a second across the strobe's entire power range for crisp action-freezing images.
  • HSSpro: Next Gen High Speed Sync. The ability to seamlessly control power and flash duration enables Photonicz One to perfectly sync with the camera's shutter at up to 1/32,000th of a second, resulting in the best possible exposure no matter what system or shutter speed is used.
  • TrueSync: Native camera compatibility. TrueSync technology ensures that Photonicz One is compatible with most Canon, Nikon, Fujifilm, Hasselblad, Pentax, Panasonic, Olympus, Phase One and Sony cameras and making a swap between camera bodies in the middle of shoot totally seamless.
  • Photonicz Sync -- For the most compatible remote on the market: The Photonicz proprietary 2.4 GHz RF system offers numerous redundancies to ensure maximum range and compatibility with a variety of camera systems.
  • TruTTL: Actual TTL metering. Photonicz One offers a world's first TrueTTL, which eliminates the simulated pre-flash that other strobes require to deliver more accurate exposure results.
  • TrueBracket: Flash bracket multiple exposures. The world's first TrueBracket technology allows shooters to bracket exposure with the strobe output rather than shutter speed, aperture or ISO alone, which means no lag between exposures for a streamlined HDR workflow.
  • VariSpeed: Extendable flash duration. Photonicz One's VariSpeed capability is another world's first feature that allows photographers to extend the flash duration to meet the unique needs of an image.
  • VariShape & VariPattern: Customize light shape and emission patterns. With VariShape, Photonicz One can recreate any light pattern for creative lighting possibilities; while VariPattern allows complete control over the emission pattern of the LEDs.

While Photonicz has developed working prototypes over the last year of development, the company is offering Photonicz One at a massive discount (estimated MSRP $1,499) to Kickstarter backers interested in helping the startup bring its flagship offering to market. Backers can secure a single Photonicz One for $749 or realize further savings on multiple units at: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/photonicz/photonicz-one-the-worlds-first-weather-sealed-led.
