In this recurring column, we highlight a few items we've run across that don't merit a full story of their own but are interesting enough to bring to your attention. This time we look at giant pandas, Cig Harvey, a Lightroom preset issue, the Panasonic 12-60mm, some twigs, museums and a Lloyd Chambers lens sale.

  • Alan Taylor presents 32 photos of The Sichuan Giant Panda Bases and Sanctuaries but you will be hard pressed to say whether the pandas or their feeders (dressed as pandas) are more amusing.
  • In Fairytale Photos of Everyday Life, Jonathan Blaustein talks to the photographer Cig Harvey about her new book You an Orchestra You a Bomb. "Every day, I sought out in everyday places images that made me jolt," she says, "that created some type of awe and made me gasp because it was so beautiful. And most of them are just in my backyard."
  • Rob Sylvan points out a Process Version 4 Heads Up. He edited an image before applying a preset that, oops, applied Process Version 3 to the image, wiping out his Version 4-based edit.
  • Robin Wong reviews the Panasonic DG Vario-Elmarit 12-60mm f2.8-4. "I was genuinely impressed by its technical flaw control, which I think surpasses other available standard zoom lens options," he concludes. "The lens is pleasant to use, quite sharp and is capable of delivering beautiful results."
  • In It Starts With Some Twigs, Harold Davis arranges a few twigs from the forest floor into an artful composition on his lightbox. But he's not done until he's fiddled with Photoshop blending modes and a few other post-processing tricks.
  • At the Museum -- Season 1 is a weekly documentary series that reveals what it takes to run a modern museum. You'll watch as the Modern Museum of Art staff designs, installs and opens exhibitions.
  • Lloyd Chambers is having another lens sale of his previously owned Zeiss, Leica, Voigtlander, Nikon, Canon, Olympus, Rodenstock and Schneider optics. "It's time to clean house on some very good lenses," he says.

We're running the public service notice below to remind Americans they can sign up for health coverage under the American Health Care Act from Nov. 1 to Dec. 15 to be insured in 2018.

More to come! Meanwhile, please support our efforts...
