In this recurring column, we highlight a few items we've run across that don't merit a full story of their own but are interesting enough to bring to your attention. This time we look at some hopeful images, Review Santa Fe, Kentaro Takahashi, the Canon 85mm f1.4L IS, Direct Relief's fire mapping and a DIY Lighting Products webinar.
- Alan Taylor presents 35 Hopeful Images From 2017. "The following are images of personal victories, families and friends at play, expressions of love and compassion, volunteers at work, assistance being given to those in need or simply small and pleasant moments," he writes. We could look at these all weekend.
- Jonathan Blaustein continues with the second part of the best portfolios he saw at Review Santa Fe.
- In The Imagining, Kentaro Takahashi talks about his ongoing project exploring Japanese society's relationship to the past and future. "We, the people who are living in Japan right now, trying to support a pluralistic society, must endure the mistakes of the past, even though the events themselves took place more than half a century ago," he says.
- In Comparing the Canon 85mm f1.4L IS Against the Competition, Phillip Pettit compares the new 85mm to the Canon 85mm f1.2L II and Sigma 85mm f1.4 Art.
- Speaking of mapping fires (as we were in October with the Santa Rosa fires), our brother Bill, a graphic artist in Santa Barbara, sent us a link to this Direct Relief Southern California Fires map. The map is drawn from current data drawn from different sources that are updated regularly. The fire detection data is derived from NASA imaging, updated every hour, for example.
- The free Rocky Nook webinar DIY Lighting Products With Mike Hagen on Dec. 13 at 11 a.m. PST will walk you through building two DIY lighting set ups. Get the parts ahead of time to follow along or just watch.
We're running the public service notice below to remind Americans they can sign up for health coverage under the American Health Care Act until Dec. 15 to be insured in 2018.
More to come! Meanwhile, please support our efforts...
