In this recurring column, we highlight a few items we've run across that don't merit a full story of their own but are interesting enough to bring to your attention. This time we look at the National Geographic Nature Photographer of the Year Contest winners, Mars, Puerto Rico, PhotoShelter, Dreamstime and handling the creative phone call.

  • In When a Hurricane Hits Home: Life in Puerto Rico After Maria, David Gonzalez interviews several photographers about their images covering the disaster.
  • PhotoShelter CEO Andrew Fingerman writes, "For the second year in a row, we've donated to individual photographer projects around the world. We call this effort'Funded by PhotoShelter.'" This year the company funded 55 photography projects that "help break stereotypes and broaden our perspectives."
  • Dreamstime has published a chart showing "the best stock photo apps from the photographer's perspective." It compares various features of the Dreamstime, Adobe Stock, Shutterstock and iStock apps:
  • In Expert Advice: The Creative Call, Craig Oppenheimer lists five tips for handling the initial phone call about a project. "These phone calls can make or break a photographer's chance of being awarded a project, no matter how on-point their numbers are or how great their portfolios look," he writes.

We're running the public service notice below to remind Americans they can sign up for health coverage under the American Health Care Act until Dec. 15 to be insured in 2018.

More to come! Meanwhile, please support our efforts...
