In this recurring column, we highlight a few items we've run across that don't merit a full story of their own but are interesting enough to bring to your attention. This time we look at Roger Fenton, Julieanne Kost, Joe McNally, Andrei Lacatusu and Tether Tools.
- In Roger Fenton: The First Great War Photographer, James Estrin explores the work of the man who photographed the Crimean War in 1855 on glass plate negatives developed in the field. The newly published Sahdows War: Roger Fentor's Photographs of the Crimea, 1855 by Sophie Gordon contains 350 of Fenton's images.
- Julieanne Kost has some advice If You Want to Take More Interesting Pictures. She got it from Jay Maisel, in fact. And it worked for her one cold day recently. "I find that if I'm patient and stand in the same spot for a few moments, images start to reveal themselves and, sure enough, interesting patterns in the ice began to catch my eye," she writes.
- In Lights! Camera! Mud!, Joe McNally shows off "the highly accurate auto-focus system of the new Nikon D850." And to do it he has to light a forest. Here's the video:
- Social Decay is Andrei Lacatusu's rendering of imaginary social media company signage after the companies have lost their luster. Really should be available as desktop wallpaper.
- Tether Tools has announced a line of USB-C Cables for faster data transfers while tethered shooting without resorting to dongles.
