In this recurring column, we highlight a few items we've run across that don't merit a full story of their own but are interesting enough to bring to your attention. This time we look at Carolyn Marks Blackwoo, an iCloud Photo Library problem, another iCloud Photo Library problem and VSCO Voices.

  • Photographer Carolyn Marks Blackwood documented the work of scientists studying the Hanna Shoal ecosystem in the Chukchi Sea aboard the Coast Guard Icebreaker Healy in 2013. At the same time, she made photographs for her personal series Arctic Midnight -- Horizons. This set of 11 images seem like works of abstract expressionism until you look closely and discover the life making a home there.
  • John Gruber had a problem with his iCloud Photo Library. Apple Photos reported it was Unable to Upload 5 Items without, uh, pointing out which ones. He created a Smart Group in Photos using "Unable to upload to iCloud Photo Library" as the matching condition to find them.
  • And Adam Engst has an iCloud Photo Library problem too. He turned iCloud off and then back on. "However, there's a nasty side effect of turning iCloud off and back on: iCloud Photo Library needs to re-upload all your photos." And that was just the beginning of his troubles.
  • Introducing VSCO Voices presents "a new grant program that supports creators who use art to empower marginalized communities in the United States." From April through November 2018, the six month program will provide each of the five grant recipients with mentorship and $20,000 in funding. Visit vscovoices.co to learn more about the program.

More to come! Meanwhile, please support our efforts...
