Leica has announced that from March 1 through April 5, photographers up to 25 years old will be able to submit entries online for the Leica Oskar Barnack Award.

The 38th annual competition calls for the submission of self-contained series, between 10 to 12 images, in which the photographers "perceive and document the interaction between man and their environment in a creative and ground-breaking style."

Among the prizes are:

  • The winner in the main category will be honored with a cash prize of €25,000 and Leica M-System equipment, both a camera and lens, valued at an additional €10,000.
  • The winner of the Newcomer Award will be honored with a cash prize of €10,000 and will also receive a Leica rangefinder camera and lens.
  • Ten additional competition submissions will each receive a €2,500 prize.

Last year's competition attracted over 2,700 entries from 104 countries. For more information see the news release below.

Leica Camera Announces Entry Dates for the 38th Annual Leica Oskar Barnack Award

Beginning March 1, professionals and up-and-coming photographers can submit their entries to the prestigious photographic competition

The internationally-acclaimed photographic competition hosted by Leica Camera has announced submission dates for the Leica Oskar Barnack Award. From March 1 through April 5 2018, professional photographers and up-and-coming photographers up to 25 years old will be able to submit entries for the Leica Oskar Barnack Award online for the opportunity to have a light shone on their impressive work. The competition calls for the submission of self-contained series, between ten and a maximum of twelve images, in which the photographers perceive and document the interaction between man and their environment in a creative and ground-breaking style. Last year's competition attracted over 2,700 entries from 104 countries.

The winners in both categories of the 38th Leica Oskar Barnack Award will be flown by Leica Camera to Germany to be presented their awards during a formal ceremony in Berlin in front of hundreds of influential people in the photography community. With prizes amounting to a total cash value of 80,000 euros, the Leica Oskar Barnack Award is one of photography's most influential competitions, providing photographers significant resources to continue pursuing their passion and for younger photographers, an opportunity to jumpstart their professional photography careers. The winner in the main category will be honored with a cash prize of 25,000 euros and Leica M-System equipment, both a camera and lens, valued at an additional 10,000 euros. The winner of the Newcomer Award will be honored with a cash prize of 10,000 euros and will also receive a Leica rangefinder camera and lens. In addition to the two main categories, ten additional competition submissions will each receive a 2,500 euros prize. The portfolios entered by all finalists will be displayed on the http://www.leica-oskar-barnack-award.com Web site and in the magazine published specially for the competition.

Series of photographs captured in 2017 and 2018 or work from long-term projects including at least one photograph made in this timeframe are eligible for submissions. The photographs are not required to be captured with a Leica camera to be considered for the awards.
