In this recurring column, we highlight a few items we've run across that don't merit a full story of their own but are interesting enough to bring to your attention. This time we look at Carnival 2018, Kaveh Kazemi, the SpaceX Falcon launch, beached gondolas and paintings of photographers.
- Alan Taylor presents 40 images of Photos of Carnival 2018 Around the World, including Brazil, Portugal, Hungary, Bolivia, Haiti, Spain, Italy and more. See? Mondays aren't all bad.
- In An Iranian Photographer's Unflinching Look at His Country's Revolution, Thomas Erdbrink interviews Kaveh Kazemi about his images of the Iranian revolution and its aftermath. "Somehow some reforms are working," Kazemi says, "and those in power are much more realistic nowadays."
- LensRentals launches a series of customer stories with Photographing the SpaceX Falcon Major Launch featuring Brady Kenniston, a portrait and wedding photographer from Bay City, Mich., who has "an affinity and talent for photographing rocket launches."
- Hope you aren't going to Venice with your camera right now. Venice Without Water shows how exceptionally low tides have drained its canals, leaving gondolas beached on its muddy banks. OTOH, you finally get to see how deep the canals are.
- In The Tables Turned: Painters Paint Photographers, Howard Oakley surveys a baker's dozen paintings depicting early photographers at work in their shabby studios. And their clientele? "His subject is manifestly poor and uncouth, sitting in ill-fitting clothes and picking his nose as he waits for the photographer to fiddle around with his equipment."
