In this recurring column, we highlight a few items we've run across that don't merit a full story of their own but are interesting enough to bring to your attention. This time we look at yesterday's school walkout, the gardens' secrets, Easter Island, STEVE, the Kamoinge Collective, Colin Combs, the iMac Pro and lawyer ads.
- School Walkout: Photos From Across the Nation presents "some compelling photos of the demonstrations, from Chicago to Washington to outside Denver." It includes a map of the continental U.S. showing at least 800 demonstrations videoed with Snapchat.
- In Revealing the Gardens' Secrets, Jordan Teicher provides a sneak preview of The Photographer in the Garden, which will be published in April by the Aperture Foundation and the George Eastman Museum.
- Nicolas Casey and photographer Hosh Haner visit Easter Island, Haner's homeland, to find the rising ocean level is threatening the island of stone statues.
- The Aurora Named STEVE is "a new celestial phenomenon is sparking the interest of scientists, photographers and astronauts. The display was initially discovered by a group of citizen scientists who took pictures of the unusual lights and playfully named them 'Steve.' Scientists have since learned more about the purples and greens and have given it a more accurate name: Strong Thermal Emission Velocity Enhancement, which can still can be shortened to STEVE."
- The Kamoinge Collective, whose name is taken from in the Kenyan Kikuyu language meaning "a group of people acting and working together," was formed in Harlem in the 1960s "to spotlight the beauty of black life, from the jazz giants to ordinary neighborhood residents."
- In A Midwestern High Schooler's Intimate, Imperfect Portrait of Adolescence, Eren Orbey explores the photography of 18-year-old Colin Combs, who focuses on his friends, most of them high-school seniors from Dayton, Ohio, "the heroin capital of the United States."
- Apple invited six creatives to push the iMac Pro to its limits by creating a personal work on the new machine. And since they were filmmakers, CG artists and motion graphics designers, they knew how to tax the hardware. They're short pieces, though. And, perhaps, a glimpse of where the performance bar will be in the near future.
- In What!!?? Lawyer Ads Can Be Misleading!, Greenberg and Reznicki admit, "Masters of the art of deception include magicians, real estate sales people, advertising executives and of course, attorneys." If you need an attorney, they advise, don't read the ads. Instead, "get a referral from a local practicing lawyer, judge, or law professor who teaches copyright law at the law school closest to where your live."
