Matinee: 'Irish Professional Photographer of the Year Awards' Share This on LinkedIn   Share This on Google   Tweet This   Forward This

24 March 2018

Saturday matinees long ago let us escape from the ordinary world to the island of the Swiss Family Robinson or the mutinous decks of the Bounty. Why not, we thought, escape the usual fare here with Saturday matinees of our favorite photography films?

So we're pleased to present the 232nd in our series of Saturday matinees today: Irish Professional Photographer of the Year Awards.

This slide show presents the top 100 photos by members of the Irish Professional Photographers & Videographers Association in the Pictorial & Travel, Press & Photojournalism and Wildlife categories.

And just to make it interesting, they are jumbled together so one second you're looking at a fox and another blink later you're seeing a cityscape at night.

The IPPVA was founded as the IPPA in 1949 (before there was any video) and has about 350 members. We wish we could tell you more but they're a very secretive group that hasn't updated their blog since 2014.

So this collection of 2018 award winners is a rare treat. And, we hope, makes up for our dismal coverage of St. Patrick's Day. Somehow we weren't in the mood to celebrate.

But life goes on, pint by pint, story by story.

And each one of these delightful images could tell a story by itself. Which would, we calculate, result in 100 pints. Guinness, we guess. Which would require a lot longer than this three-minute presentation that, alas, goes by too quickly.

So take a moment to enjoy it whether you're a devotee of travel photography or photojournalism or wildlife. There's something here for everyone.

Oh, wait a minute. Don't go yet.

We forgot about the Fine Arts photographers out there. But we do have something for you, too. Just as fresh, too. And from the same gang:

The names of the photographers are revealed at the end of each clip. Their images flash before you in a little over a second each. But you'll still enjoy the show, we promise. Because there's great stuff in each of them.

And please accept our belated wishes for a happy St. Patrick's Day.
