In this recurring column, we highlight a few items we've run across that don't merit a full story of their own but are interesting enough to bring to your attention. This time we look at Gilles Caron, Tatsuya Tanaka, Stefano Galli, modern stereoscopic images, a Strobist lesson, hard drive stats and some Nikon deals at Adorama.

  • In These Protests Defined a Generation in France 50 Years Ago, Jordan Teicher interviews Robert Pledge, the co-founder and director of Contact Press Images, about Gilles Caron's photographs of the civil unrest in Paris during May 1968. "Even if he had an opinion and had implicitly chosen a side he'd always try to look at all sides of an event," Pledge said.
  • Jeffrey Friedl encountered The Miniature-Life Work of Tatsuya Tanaka and took a few photos, which was encouraged, under difficult conditions. The imagination (faux blurred background on the bike race, for example) and fun (the broccoli harvest and the tape dispenser office) come through loud and clear, though.
  • Grand Turismo showcases Stefano Galli's travels through the American Southwest to explore the role mass tourism now plays in the evolution of travel photography. "I was very surprised to see people more interested in taking selfies with their sticks rather then photographing the amazing views," Galli says.
  • Ming Thein conducted some Experiments With Stereoscopic Photography but he crossed his eyes instead of his fingers.
  • Strobist David Hobby continues his Strobist Lighting Cookbook with Need Light With More Edge? Aim It Away From Your Subject. Which says it all.
  • Backblaze has published its Hard Drive Stats for Q1 2018 on the 98,188 data drives in its data centers. The report also discusses 10 new SMART attributes and takes a sneak peek at some 8-TB Toshiba drives.
  • Adorama is offering a nice deal on the Nikon D750 with a battery grip, filter packs, memory card, bag and more starting Sunday and running through June 2. There's a similar deal on the Nikon D500, Nikon D810 and Nikon D3400.

More to come! Meanwhile, please support our efforts...
