In this recurring column, we highlight a few items we've run across that don't merit a full story of their own but are interesting enough to bring to your attention. This time we look at John Moore at the border, Hasselblad Masters Award winners, ultra wide zoom lenses, a graduate program in photography and remembering Apple's Aperture.
- In Image of Sobbing Toddler at US Border: 'It Was Hard for Me to Photograph', Getty Images photographer John Moore recalls how he got the shot that has framed the discussion about the current administration's decision to handle illegal immigration as a criminal rather than a civil matter.
- Hasselblad has posted the winning images in its Hasselblad Masters Award 2018 competition. Each winner receives a new Hasselblad medium format camera and is invited to shoot for a collaborative project with Hasselblad.
- In Comparing the Best Ultra Wide Zoom Lenses From Canon, Nikon, Sony & Sigma, Phillip Pettit tests the Canon 11-24mm f4L on a Canon 5D Mark III, the Nikon 14-24mm f2.8G ED AF-S on a Nikon D750 and the Sigma 14-24mm f2.8 DG HSM Art on a Sony Alpha a9. Conclusion: "I have to say that there's not a bad lens in this offering."
- In King of Nuthin', Mike Johnston imagines setting up "a graduate program in studio art for photography." Compare to RIT's Photography and Related Media MFA Degree, if you're inclined toward study.
- Jason Row explains Why I Miss Apple Aperture and why Apple Photos is no replacement.
