In this recurring column, we highlight a few items we've run across that don't merit a full story of their own but are interesting enough to bring to your attention. This time we look at Japan floods, McNally in the country, travel photography spots, a bag for lighting gear, Photoshop on the iPad, new MacBook Pro considerations, Apple's photo printing and 99U Conference videos.
- In Death Toll Reaches 200 in Devastating Japan Floods, Alan Taylor presents 31 photos of "the worst weather-related disaster to hit Japan in more than 30 years."
- Joe McNally sets up for Music and Pictures in the Country! Cream City Ice Cream in Cookeville, Tenn., in fact. "At the end of the day, just an enjoyable, simple shoot," he writes. Doesn't look that simple to us, though.
- In Looking for Places to Visit This Summer?, Scott Kelby shares some photos and stories of "some places I think you'd love to visit and photograph." Almost all of them require a passport for Americans like Kelby. But you can always visit San Francisco without one. We're a sanctuary city, after all.
- David Hobby continues his Strobist Lighting Cookbook with The Best Compact Lighting Bag Is Not a Photography Bag. In this case, it turns out to be a $22.99 chess bag. And you have your pick of 30 colors, too.
- Mark Gurman and Nico Grant report Adobe Will Reportedly Bring the Full Photoshop to the iPad in 2019. "The software developer is planning to unveil the new app at its annual MAX creative conference in October, according to people with knowledge of the plan," they write. And that's not the only Creative Cloud application that will make the leap, they add.
- In Apple Updates the MacBook Pro to a Real Pro Machine, Lloyd Chambers warns that TrueTone may play havoc with color adjustments and that the internal SSD is not replaceable so get a big enough (2-TB) one. "It can be a very expensive mistake to buy too small an SSD (buy another one to fix the problem, a huge cost)," he writes.
- Ashley Carman reports Apple Will End Its Photo Printing Operation in September, noting that the company "suggests that users download a third-party app from the Mac App Store to get prints." Like WhiteWall's.
- The videos from Adobe's 99U Conference 2018 have been posted.
