17 July 2018

Kwilt has launched the Shoebox Plus, its second hardware/software solution for phone photographers who want to move their photos from the confines of their phone to more permanent USB storage without resorting to someone else's cloud.

Kwilt Showbox Plus. With included 64-GB USB memory stick in one of four ports next to the Ethernet port and HDMI port on the other side between the power connector and audio port.

Instead the Kwilt products connect to your local area network (like your cable/TV/Internet box), providing an interface to any USB storage device from memory sticks to thumbdrives to external drives you plug into them. These devices then can appear on your desktop.

But the real magic is done with the Kwilt software, available on the Adroid and Apple app stores for any mobile device. Open the software and it shows you your photo collections on the phone and, optionally, in the cloud (including Instagram, Facebook, Google Photos, Dropbox, etc.).

And because it can see your USB storage on the network now, it can make the connection, allowing you to copy all your images from any source to that USB storage. Optionally, you can delete them from your phone to regain all that free space as well.

We managed to transfer about 3.5-GB of images and video from our phone to the Kwilt in about 20 minutes. During the transfer, you see a progress bar for each individual item with its thumbnail and the overall task.

The Kwilt software displays your photo collection from any enabled source (including the Kwilt), tagging each thumbnail with an icon indicating where it is. It can organize your collection by date or location and search by any criteria.

We'll have a full review shortly but we can confirm that 1) everything you need is in the box, 2) installation was a breeze (you don't need an IT person) and 3) the software works wonderfully well. Our version of the software is not final, so we're not able to publish the review today.

One of the software features we were able to preview is Kwilt Cast, which displays your images via the Kwilt's HDMI port to an HDTV.

Kwilt Cast. Initial display on an HDTV.

You can swipe from image to image after enabling the feature or select a few images and let the Kwilt software run a slide show for you.

It's worth emphasizing that your photos never leave the house. They go from your phone (and any enabled source like Google Drive) to the storage devices plugged into your Kwilt. It's your personal cloud, easy to access yet private expandable storage.

During installation you name your Kwilt and set a password that only you know so access to it is secured.

We were able to leave the bunker, lose our WiFi connection to the router and access our photos via the Kwilt using a cellular data connection. So while they're not necessarily on your phone, they're never far away.

The Kwilt Shoebox Plus will be available in August for $119 on Amazon, Indiegogo and at The Kwilt app is available for free on the Android and Apple app stores.

The more limited Kwilt Shoebox is available for $49.

Kwilt Expands Personal Cloud Product Offering With Kwilt Shoebox Plus

Higher performance, faster network connectivity for the demanding consumer

SAN FRANCISCO -- Kwilt, an award-winning personal media solutions innovator, today announced the launch of the Kwilt Shoebox Plus, a device that turns any memory key or external drive into a private, personal cloud where consumers can offload photos and videos from their smartphones and other devices and still access their content anytime, anywhere.

The Kwilt Shoebox Plus is platform agnostic and includes all of the great features of its sister product, the Kwilt Shoebox Mini, plus even faster processing speeds thanks to its Quad-Core CPU, 5 GHz Wireless-AC network and the ability to connect directly to your router through fast Ethernet. Photos are uploaded in seconds and its additional USB ports allow up to four storage devices to be connected simultaneously. With the Plus, consumers can:

  • Offload mobile photos and videos seamlessly at faster speeds

"Kwilt Shoebox Plus was designed based on the market feedback for Kwilt Shoebox Mini, taking into consideration action cam videographers, drone hobbyists and amateur photographers' requests for a more powerful solution to fit their advanced needs."
