In this recurring column, we highlight a few items we've run across that don't merit a full story of their own but are interesting enough to bring to your attention. This time we look at Mohamed Mahdy, abandoned sites in Russia, Photoshop blend modes, that blood moon, the Canon Pro-100 and Mary Caroline Russell.
- Egyptian photographer Mohamed Mahdy takes A Portrait of an Egyptian Neighborhood Breathing Toxic Dust with his project Moon Dust.
- Alan Taylor presents 35 Photos of Abandoned Russia including "intriguing ghost towns, empty Soviet factories, toppling houses and crumbling chapels."
- Julieanne Kost explores Working With Blend Modes in Photoshop CC. Briefly but comprehensively.
- In Attempting the Blood Moon, Robin Wong uses an Olympus M.Zuiko 300mm f4 ISO PRO with the teleconverter MC-14 on an Olympus OM-D E-M1 Mark II. It wasn't easy.
- Derek Story wonders Should You Invest in a 2012 Photo Printer on Sale? He did and he's happy about it but he's candid about a drawback or two. The Canon Pro-100 remains our best 13x19 dye-based printer.
- Entertainment photographer Mary Caroline Russell guest blogs on Kelby One. "I have been able to circle the globe taking photos, shoot some of my favorite bands, be in Alabama shooting Lynard Skynard while they sang Sweet Home Alabama (that was a fun one) and be surrounded by some of the most inspiring people I've ever met," she writes.
