In this recurring column, we highlight a few items we've run across that don't merit a full story of their own but are interesting enough to bring to your attention. This time we look at Viviane Dalles, the Ford Mustang, the Lombok Island earthquake, data vulnerabilities, the 11th Annual Worldwide Photo Walk, the Perseids meteor shower, Apple MacBook Pro configurations, an AI-Based image search comparison and a Slik tripod deal.
- Remy Tumin tags along with photographer Viviane Dalles in Following a Refugee Family's Long Journey to U.S. Citizenship. "Long" is putting it mildly. The family spent 18 years as refugees before arriving in Texas. It was a lengthy project for Dalles, too.
- The Evolution of the Ford Mustang in Photos celebrates the 10th million Mustang rolling off the assembly line in Detroit. Number 10,000,000 posed next to Number 1 just before bolting away.
- Alan Taylor presents 32 Images From the Lombok Island Earthquake where "at least 250 deaths and many hundreds of injuries have been reported so far and tens of thousands have been left homeless."
- Zach Sutton and Ryan Hill have a few suggestions for Protecting Your Data From Camera to Archive on the Backblaze blog. They put out a lot of data-loss fires at LensRentals and Hill shares his own workflow. "The critical point you should take away is that these sorts of strategies are things you should be thinking about at every step of your production," they write. And in a complementary article on the LensRentals site, the Backblaze staff discusses 3-2-1 Backup Best Practices Using Cloud Archiving.
- Scott Kelby's 11th Annual Worldwide Photo Walk will be held Saturday, Oct. 6, in a city near you. Canon is the sponsor again this year.
- Carter explains How to Photograph the Perseids Meteor Shower this weekend. A long exposure is required to catch the little things.
- Lloyd Chambers lists 2018 Apple MacBook Pro Recommended Configurations, starting at $2,499 and working their way up to $4,699. "That the MacBook Pro with 32-GB memory takes only 26 percent longer than the 2017 iMac 5K with 64-GB is impressive," he writes. That iMac would run about $3,700.
- In Evaluation of AI-Based Image Search: Excire Inc. vs. Adobe, Apple & Google, Excire compares the strategies and results of these image search options using a 1,500 JPEG dataset built from Flickr consisting of 100 categories.
- Adorama is featuring instant rebates up to $70 on Slik Carbon Fiber Tripods:
