In this recurring column, we highlight a few items we've run across that don't merit a full story of their own but are interesting enough to bring to your attention. This time we look at auctioneers, Tuvalu, Enchance (the game), photo print labs, Wellcome contest and DxO discounts. Plus a tribute to today's Free Press movement.

  • Amanda Petrusich reports on The Hypnotizing Chants of Champion Livestock Auctioneers with photos and video by David Williams. We've known a few auctioneers including a pioneer in online auctioneering who still owes us a few martinis.
  • In A Visit to Tuvalu, Surrounded by the Rising Pacific, Alan Taylor presents 24 photos (including one of a pig being shaved in the ocean) by Fiona Goodall of Getty Images. "Goodall reports that high tides regularly bring flooding that 'inundates taro plantations, floods either side of the airport runway and affects people's homes,'" he notes.
  • "You have logged into ENHANCE.COMPUTER, the world's most advanced image-enhancement software," the Enhance simulation begins (if you're running desktop Chrome). You control zoom and enhancement with voice commands while looking for a secret code.
  • Gannon Burgett lists Seven Top Photo Labs to print your images online. "We've rounded up the options from personal experience, pro photographer recommendations and web reviews to put together our seven favorite photo printers, from online to in-person," he writes.
  • The Wellcome Photography Prize 2019 is open for submissions. "We invite photographers and other image makers from all disciplines to enter the Wellcome Photography Prize, which celebrates compelling imagery that captures stories of health, medicine and science," the contest page says. Deadline for entries is Dec. 17.
  • Through Aug. 20, DxO is offering discounts up to 40 percent on upgrades from all versions of OpticsPro to PhotoLab. With the offer, you can get PhotoLab Essential for $39.99 or PhotoLab Elite for $69.99.

THIS PUBLICATION, which has from the start reported on the political and financial threats facing photojournalists, takes a moment to salute the hundreds of newspapers who have answered the Boston Globe's call to defend a free press today as the president bellows to his supporters to listen only to him, the source of over 6.5 false statements a day.

The New York Times, whose Lens pages is often featured in this column, joins the call with a list of excerpts from the editorials of participating publications.

We aren't free without a free press. We are simply manipulated.

More to come! Meanwhile, please support our efforts...
