In this recurring column, we highlight a few items we've run across that don't merit a full story of their own but are interesting enough to bring to your attention. This time we look at John Zimmerman's photos of Arthur Ask, South East Asia's wildlife tourism industry, Z System Q&A, silent shutters, X-ray photography, a 2018 MacBook review, an editing challenge and Francoise Gilot.

  • In The Quiet Heroism of Arthur Ashe, Maurice Berger continues his Race Stories for the New York Times with images by photographer John Zimmerman of the tennis champion. Zimmerman's book Crossing the Line: Arthur Ashe at the 1968 US Open will be published Sept. 1.
  • Life in Chains is an ongoing series by 24-year-old British photographer Louis Supple that sheds light on South East Asia's wildlife tourism industry. "One of my primary aims is to get people to develop an understanding of the poor animal welfare standards in many of these places," Supple says.
  • Thom Hogan answers Reader Questions About the Nikon Z 6/Z 7. The most interesting to us was Iliah Borg's report that the Z series uses a completely new structure for the tags/data in its NEF image. Borg's RawDigger is currently being discounted 25 percent.
  • In Silent Shutters and Psychology, Jim Kasson gets used to using a silent shutter and finds himself ignored as he shoots. "Isn't it nice that you can turn the fake shutter sound on for those occasions when you want it?" he asks.
  • In Revealing the Unseen With X-Ray Photography of Flowers, Harold Davis discusses the X-ray photography he did in Heidelberg with Dr. Julian Köpke. They used X-rays that ranged from 20 to 40 kV, roughly 1,000 times more energy than visible light, to see through flowers.
  • Terry White reviews the 2018 MacBook Pro Review after explaining why he skipped the previous two generations. He waited for one that was noticeably faster than his 2012 model. But he still had to deal with Dongle Hell, as he calls is. Not surprisingly, as Michael Potuck reported last week, Dongles Have Been Apple's Top-Selling Products for the Last Two Years at Best Buy. White lists his solutions, including a clever 32-GB Verbatim thumbdrive with a pass-though USB port on one end.
  • Scott Kelby proposes The 'New Eyes' Photography Challenge. Re-edit an image you edited five years ago to see if you can "bring new life to them" with more modern tools.
  • In a New Book of Sketches, Françoise Gilot Clears Her Mind of the Past, Lauren Christensen reports. It's an inspiring article, compiling some intriguing quotes from the painter. "Art doesn't come from what is around you, but from what is inside of you," Gilot says. "If you can think of something in words, then you can see it in images too," she adds.

More to come! Meanwhile, please support our efforts...
