In this recurring column, we highlight a few items we've run across that don't merit a full story of their own but are interesting enough to bring to your attention. This time we look at new iPhone camera reviews, Super Typhoon Mangkhut, fine art photo books, Photoshop's artistic filters, tilted lens adapters, backup practices and net neutrality.

  • Reviews (and sample shots) of the new iPhones are starting to pop up. Among our favorite trusted sources so far:
    • In The iPhones XS, John Gruber quotes Phil Schiller in 2015 already claiming Apple as the leading camera company in the world. Gruber finds the new generation phone carries the torch further. "I've focused nearly the entirety of my testing on taking photos and videos side-by-side against my 10-month old iPhone X," he writes. "Overall, I'm simply blown away by the iPhone XS's results."
    • Former White House photographer Pete Souza shows off the First Pictures Taken Using Apple's New iPhone XS for the Daily Mail.
    • Austin Mann went to Zanzibar for his usual First Look at Real-World Performance of the new iPhones but this time hosted on PetaPixel.
  • Alan Taylor presents 32 photos of The Aftermath of Super Typhoon Mangkhut, a Category 5-equivalent super typhoon with sustained winds of 125 miles an hour.
  • Mike Johnston answers a Photo Books Question. And that is: Why do highly desired photography books remain out of print?
  • Julieanne Kost continues her 3, 2, 1, Photoshop! series with Explore Different Artistic Filters in Photoshop CC:
  • In More on Tilted Adapters, Jim Kasson points out, "Even adapters with a slight tilt don't affect the sharpness of a lens; they just affect the orientation of the plane of sharpest focus on both the sensor side (in the image field) and in the photographed scene (in the object field)."
  • The Backblaze staff lists Five Best Practices to Securely Preserve Your Video, Photo, and Other Data. "The best security practices are the ones that are easy to follow consistently," they note.
  • In Trump's FCC Chief Takes Aim at California's Net Neutrality Bill, Reviving Threadbare Arguments, Michael Hiltzik covers Ajit Pai's attack on SB822, California's net neutrality bill, in which he called the legislation illegal. Hiltzik also reports Sen. Scott Wiener (D-San Francisco), the bill's sponsor, responded, "The reality is that California is the world's innovation capital and unlike the crony capitalism promoted by the Trump administration, California understands exactly what it takes to foster an open innovation economy with a level playing field." Hiltzik goes on to analyze the controversy, concluding, "The United States has fallen behind not because of too much regulation, but because of too little and too indulgent, oversight."

More to come! Meanwhile, please support our efforts...
