In this recurring column, we highlight a few items we've run across that don't merit a full story of their own but are interesting enough to bring to your attention. This time we look at Jose Alvarado Jr., portraits of booksellers, construction sites, iOS 12 Photo searches, Karen Hutton and Joey Lawrence.
- In He Photographed What Hurricane Maria 'Couldn't Take Away' From His Family, David Gonzalez talks to Jose Alvarado Jr. about his "duty to his family, if not to the island and its diaspora, too." And that was to photography not just the destruction but "people trying to move forward after a year of heartbreak."
- Franck Bohbot has been documenting Indie Bookstores and Their Booksellers. "These booksellers' portraits are a reflection of their customers and ultimately of their neighborhoods and collectively make a portrait of New York City," he says.
- In The Textures of Construction, Ming Thein finds "the work in progress textures to be at least as appealing as the finished product." He demonstrates why in this photo essay of construction projects.
- In iOS 12 Adds Powerful Search to Photos, Jason Snell walks through the new search options. "If you want to find photos with specific combinations of people, places, or actions, you can do it in seconds," he notes.
- Karen Hutton -- Photographer, Purveyor of Awesomeness talks about love and awe, two of her favorite concepts. "Photography is love made visible," the landscape photographer writes before pointing out that learning the craft "frees you to focus upon the feeling, vision or the message of your art."
- We Came From Fire: Photographs of Kurdistan's Armed Struggle Against ISIS collects images Joey Lawrence created during four tours with Kurdish fighters in the Iraq and Syrian civil wars. It will be released on Dec. 11.
