In this recurring column, we highlight a few items we've run across that don't merit a full story of their own but are interesting enough to bring to your attention. This time we look at seven miles up, Alnis Stakle, Kate Gazaway, monochrome smart photography, going commercial, Topaz, Lightroom preset changes, property releases, Capture One Style Packs and the Affinity Workbook.
- In Seven Square Miles, Alan Taylor presents 39 Google Earth photos taken from "the same virtual height" above the earth.
- Diane Smyth interviews Alnis Stakle on His Prize-Winning Series Heavy Waters, shot along the coast in Crimea when it was still under Ukrainian control. Stakle is Professor of Photography at the Rigas Stradins University and a board member for Riga Photomonth.
- Non-Profit Founder, Photography Teacher, and Creative Activist Kate Gazaway guest blogs for Scott Kelby. "I founded Picture Change in 2011 in response to the realization that the people in front of my camera were able to tell their own story, they just lacked the education and resources to do so," she writes.
- In Black on White, Bob Weil "presents a selection of what I found to be the most interesting images for the week in our [iPhoneographyCentral] Flickr group, across a wide range of styles and subjects." They're all monochrome images created with various apps he covers in his Apps Uncovered series.
- Kristina Feliciano provides some a couple of tips on Breaking Into Commercial Assignments.
- In A Creative Palette of Possibilities Webinar Recording and a Porcupine, Harold Davis links to a recording of a recent webinar on using Topaz. The porcupine is apparently a stickler for details like that.
- Gavin Seim has released two videos explaining Adobe's Changes to Lightroom presets.
- In Property Releases Revisited, Carolyn Wright writes, "There aren't many lawsuits on this issue because there's usually no valid cause of action." But there are a few rules to follow.
- You can save 50 percent on Capture One 2019 Styles Packs. The eight packs, which regularly sell for $472 and are now $236, include 112 styles.
- The Affinity Workbook is on sale for $29.99, a 40 percent discount. Full of tips, tricks and professional projects, it's the fastest, most comprehensive way to master Affinity Photo on Mac or Windows, the company said.
