In this recurring column, we highlight a few items we've run across that don't merit a full story of their own but are interesting enough to bring to your attention. This time we look at newborn stars, Astronomy Photographer of the Year winners, Chiara Zonca, mirrorless systems and B&H PhotoPlus deals.
- In Newborn Stars Blow Bubbles in the Cat's Paw Nebula, NASA's infrared Spitzer Space Telescope shows the nebula named for its large, round features that resemble a feline footprint. Estimates of its distance from Earth range from about 4,200 to about 5,500 light-years.
- The Royal Museums Greenwhich has announced the winners of its Astronomy Photographer of the Year competition.
- Stephanie Wade presents a series of images of New Zealand's Other-Wordly Landscapes by Chiara Zonca. "I am hoping this collection will inspire a true sense of mystery and renewed respect for nature and our surroundings, that way too often we tend to forget and should instead be re-discovered," Zonca told her.
- After Photokina, Thom Hogan asks, Where Are We? in the mirrorless segment. "The true bottom edge of the market seems to currently be 24-Mp APS-C," he writes. But he expects that edge to keep moving up.
- Among the PhotoPlus 2018 Specials at B&H are the SanDisk 2TB Extreme Portable USB 3.1 Type-C External SSD for $339.99 (a $210 savings and the same price as Amazon) and the SanDisk 128GB Ultra UHS-I SDXC Memory Card (Class 10).
