In this recurring column, we highlight a few items we've run across that don't merit a full story of their own but are interesting enough to bring to your attention. This time we look at smartphones captured, Sony Alpha Female, Muhammad Ali, PHMuseum's Women Photographer Grant, Chicago, bad product photo service, Sigma Sale and Hank Wessel memorial update.
- The Ubiquity of Smartphones, as Captured by Photographers collects 34 photos of smartphones in action. The captions tell quite a story, too.
- Sony has announced the winners of its Sony Alpha Female contest. The five creators-in-residence appointed to six month terms that include $25,000 in grants, $5,000 in gear and mentorship, among other perks are Danielle Da Silva, Colette Robinson, Nitashia Johnson, Erin Hogue and Megan Allen.
- In Louisville and Muhammad Ali: A Rare Look at a Hometown Champ, Randal Archibold showcases a few of the intimate images of Ali by The Courier Journal photographers collected in Picture: Muhammad Ali -- A Rare Glimpse Into the Life of The Champ.
- Diane Smyth catalogs the shortlist for the PHMuseum's Women Photographer Grant, which includes samples of work by Diana Markosian, Laura Pannack, Alice Mann, Anna Boyiazis and others.
- In Cityscape Chicago, Ming Thein again tries to see if his "short and long term impressions remain constant" with a series "shot over a long, long period of time with a wide variety of equipment."
- Bad Product Photos are "often a big hurdle," Elize Brooke reports. Weebly's Photo Studio will take care of the problem for $75 a product (three angles).
- Sigma is discounting its Global Vision lenses up to $150 during its two-week Black Friday/Cyber Monday Sale. The sale begins today and ends Nov. 29 at Adorama, B&H and other dealers.
- A memorial event for Hank Wessel will be held will at the San Francisco Art Institute on Dec. 2 at 2 p.m. at the Osher Lecture Hall on 800 Chestnut St.
