25 December 2018

We thought we'd celebrate Christmas with you this year by highlighting this image from the Hubble Space Telescope of glowing clouds of interstellar gar in the Lagoon Nebula. It was the first image featured in Alan Taylor's 2018 Hubble Space Telescope Advent Calendar and we've been admiring it all month.

There has been something reassuring about seeing this faraway paradise every day in December. This crop of the spectacular nebula only hints that it is 4,000 light-years away from us, spanning 55 light-years across and 20 light-years high.

It is, in short, an enormous and unfathomable beauty whose ancient photons we can nevertheless capture as if we were just taking another snapshot of something here on earth.

Talk about miracles.
