Leica has announced photographers can submit entries to the international photographic competition from March 1 through April 1 for the 2019 Leica Oskar Barnack Award.

Leica also announced it has raised the upper age limit for the Leica Oskar Barnack Newcomer Award to 28 this year.

An international jury of experts will choose the 12 finalists for the Leica Oskar Barnack Award and Leica Oskar Barnack Newcomer Award. This year's full jury includes:

  • Karin Rehn-Kaufmann, Art Director & Chief Representative of Leica Galleries International (Austria)
  • Fran&ctilde;ois Hébel, Director of Foundation Henri Cartier-Bresson (France)
  • Milena Carstens, Director of Photography at ZEITmagazin (Germany)
  • Max Pinckers, Photographer & winner of the LOBA 2018 (Belgium)
  • Steve McCurry, Photographer & founder of ImagineAsia

Leica Oskar Barnack Award prizes amount to over €80,000. The winner in the main category is granted €25,000 and Leica M-System equipment (a camera and lens) valued at an additional €10,000. The winner of the Leica Oskar Barnack Newcomer Award will be honored with €10,000 and will also receive a Leica rangefinder camera and lens. Additionally, the ten runner-up submissions will each be honored with prizes of €2,500.

Leica Camera Announces Entry Dates for Oskar Barnack Award

Beginning March 1, photographers can submit entries to the photographic competition with world-renowned photographer Steve McCurry on this year's jury of experts

Leica Camera has announced the official submission dates for the internationally-acclaimed 2019 Leica Oskar Barnack Award. Professional and up-and-coming photographers can submit entries to the international photographic competition from March 1 through April 1 2019. Up-and-coming photographers will be particularly excited to hear that the age limit for the Leica Oskar Barnack Newcomer Award has been raised and photographers up to the age of 28 can now partake in this category.

To participate in the competition, candidates in both categories must submit a self-contained series of between ten and twelve images where they perceive and document the interaction between man and their environment in a creative and ground-breaking style. Submissions must consist of a photography series captured in 2018 and 2019 or works from long-term projects that feature a portion of photographs taken in one or both years. The international jury of experts will choose the twelve finalists for the Leica Oskar Barnack Award and Leica Oskar Barnack Newcomer Award, whose portfolios stand out amongst the work of other contestants.

Leica Camera is honored to have world-renowned photographer Steve McCurry on this year's jury of experts this year. He has been widely recognized for his work, most notably his photograph "Afghan Girl." The image garnered world-wide attention in 1985 and became a symbol of women refugees in Afghanistan. In 2004, McCurry founded ImagineAsia, which works in partnership with local community leaders and regional NGO's to help provide educational resources and opportunities to children and young adults in Afghanistan.

The 39th annual Leica Oskar Barnack winners will receive their accolades at a formal ceremony in Berlin and the works of the winners and finalists will be presented at a public exhibition in the Neue Schule für Fotografie in Berlin. The impressive portfolios of the two winners and the finalists will also presented on the competition Web site http://www.leica-oskar-barnack-award.com and in the print magazine published for the competition.
