Topaz Labs Introduces Sharpen AI Share This on LinkedIn   Share This on Google   Tweet This   Forward This

28 February 2019

Topaz Labs has introduced Sharpen AI, an artificial-intelligence driven image sharpening tool that works as a standalone or plug-in for Photoshop, Lightroom Classic, or Topaz Studio.

Artificial intelligence schools the software in the difference between detail and noise, Topaz Labs said. It can improve images that suffer from camera shake, focus correction (up to 10 pixels) and motion blur, the company said.

Only JPEG, JP2, J2K, TIFF and PNG file types are supported.

A QUICK TEST

As we mentioned in our review of Topaz Labs JPEG to Raw AI, our GPU doesn't meet the minimum requirements but is still recognized by the software. So we gave it a shot on an image that suffered camera blur despite in-body image stabilization.

It's important to identify what the problem is because the software can take three different approaches to solving it. The built-in help screens are enough information to make an informed choice.

Step Two. Picking the solution is critical.

For us, stabilization was the problem. So we run option 2 on the JPEG we had exported from Adobe Camera Raw.

We ran Sharpen AI in standalone mode and the first run went well. But it didn't save the image. So we clicked on the Save As button and that not only saved the image with a description filename but it also reran the conversion. And that time it took a lot longer.

Still, it did a good job sharpening the image, as you can see from the 100 percent crops at the top of this story.

PRICE, AVAILABILITY

Sharpen AI is available now from Topaz Labs for $59.99 (regular price will be $79.99 after March 15). System requirements include 8-GB system RAM and 2-GB GPU VRAM. A trial version is also available.

Introducing Sharpen AI

Sharpen AI is the only sharpening tool to understand the difference between detail and noise by learning through millions of images. This means it will focus on sharpening the things you actually want to sharpen, rather than artifacts or noise. Use it to create beautifully sharp images from even handheld, low-light and fast-moving photos -- try Sharpen AI today!

Sharpens and Defines

Most commercial sharpening tools will sharpen everything in your image -- including noise. Sharpen AI only sharpens the things you want and brings out the detail and definition in your shot. It only sharpens the good stuff.

Stabilizes

When shooting a moving object or in a low-light scenario, motion blur is a common problem. Sharpen AI uses machine learning to stabilize motion blur in your images for a crisp clear result.

Improves Focus

Theoretically, there is no way to recover lens blur in your photos. Sharpen AI remembers patterns in your image and can rescue a blur within 10 pixels. When your image is just slightly out of focus, Sharpen AI provides the solution.

How does this compare to other products?

Unlike other sharpening products, like Photoshop Shake Reduction, Sharpen AI is the first product to use machine learning to fill in the details that other sharpening tools leave out. The AI technology delivers a crisp, clear image that is full of detail.
