In this recurring column, we highlight a few items we've run across that don't merit a full story of their own but are interesting enough to bring to your attention. This time we look at Alam's Photo Festival, masks, fedoras, Spectre, CHDK, a gear sale and the 2019 Daylight Photo Awards.
- In Shahidul Alam's Photo Festival in Bangladesh Is 'An Act of Defiance', James Estrin tells how one of the world’s premier photo events almost didn't happen this year.
- Alan Taylor presents 30 images of The Masks We Wear "for fun, for protection or to make a statement."
- In Production of Fedora Hats, The Guardian shows how Borsalino's prized felt hats are handmade by 80 workers in its Piedmont factory, using hot water, steam and craftsmanship to transform rabbit fur into the highly-prized creations.
- In Introducing Spectre, Sebastiaan de With introduces the company's second iPhone app (after Halide):. It's "a computational shutter for iPhone that allows everyone to take brilliant long exposures." He writes, "Spectre reimagines long exposures: its intelligent shutter takes hundreds of photos during the exposure time and merges the result. That means you don't just get a final still image, but also a video of the entire exposure as it happened."
- A Q&A With the CHDK Developers explores the free, open source software for Canon PowerShot digicams that expands what they can do.
- Lloyd Chambers is having a mini Gear Sale that includes Nikon, Olympus, Leica, Rodenstock and Schneider items.
- The winner of the 2019 Daylight Photo Awards will receive $1,000, a digital feature and a chance to have their project considered for publication. Judges include Jacqueline Bates (California Sunday Magazine), Clinton Cargill (Vanity Fair), Elizabeth Renstrom (Vice), Gabriel Sanchez (Buzzfeed) and Kamil Tyebally (Refinery 29). Deadline for submissions is May 1. There is a $35 entry fee.
