In this recurring column, we highlight a few items we've run across that don't merit a full story of their own but are interesting enough to bring to your attention. This time we look at migration, Frans Lanting, Carleton Watkins, a free watercolor action, applying for grants or prizes, hiding photos on your phone, Photoshop's Academy Award, fair use and ON1's spring sale.
- In Chronicling the Reasons Central Americans Migrate to the United States, David Gonzalez talks to Fred Ramos who has been photographing "the longstanding political, social and environmental crises that are driving migration in the region."
- A Look Into Bird Photography With Frans Lanting, the National Geographic wildlife photographer who has published over 10 books on the subject. Gear (including the Nikon Z 7) and how to use it cover the peek at his upcoming CreativeLive class. Meanwhile Hanna Brooks Olsen reveals The Story That Inspired Nature Photographer Frans Lanting.
- In How Photographer Carleton Watkins Chronicled the West, art historian Tyler Green discusses Watkins impact. Green recently published Carleton Watkins: Making the West American.
- In Transform Photos Into Watercolors With a Free Photoshop Action, Charles Purdy introduces a free watercolor generator from Nuwan Panditha. Install the Action, Brushes and Patterns, set the area of the image to convert (not the whole image, you are warned) and run the watercolor action. - ON1's spring sale of 20 percent off upgrades to Photo Raw 2019.2 ends March 28. That's a bundle worth $209.96 for $63.99.
