In this recurring column, we highlight a few items we've run across that don't merit a full story of their own but are interesting enough to bring to your attention. This time we look at Sudan protests, World Press Photo Contest, event photography, JS Ondara, that fly, Jim Colton, camera lenses primer, dog and cat behavior and that Black Hole photo.
- In Sudan Protests Lead to the Removal of President Omar Al-Bashir, Alan Taylor presents 24 photos of the anti-government protests in Sudan that have built since the end of last year.
- Is This the Best Photo of the Year? asks James Estrin of John Moore's photo of a 2-year-old asylum seeker and her mother. The Guardian has published the winners in each category of The World Press Photo Contest 2019.
- Kirk Tuck updates his Event Photography approach to take advantage of higher ISOs and a smaller flash. "Most of the time I wasn't just depending on the ambient light, I was using the small, included-with-the-camera flash to fill in and get me a little closer to clean color," he writes.
- Jacob Blickenstaff is On the Road With JS Ondara at Rough Trade in Williamsburg, where the Kenyan folk singer inspired by Bob Dylan made the second stop on his U.S. and European tour.
- Roger Cicala went to great lengths in Removing a Fly From 'Weather Sealed' Canon 70-200mm F/2.8L IS II. But it "had almost no effect on image quality," he points out.
- Joe McNally pays homage to Jim Colton in Another Reason to Revere Uncle Jimmy. "He remembered and not all inside staff at the magazines do, how cold it can get out here in Freelanceville," he writes. He also cites Coltonn's Have You Ever Thought About Plumbing as a Career? in which he praises his "nieces."
- In Which Camera Lens Should You Choose? Jasenka Grujin provides "a list of various lenses (their focal lengths) and their functions" to help newbies built their kit.
- Justin Katz (really) provides The Photographer's Guide to Dog and Cat Behavior in four simple infographics.
- Andrew Molitor calls the Black Hole Photo "a data visualization ... extrapolated quite a bit by software."
