In this recurring column, we highlight a few items we've run across that don't merit a full story of their own but are interesting enough to bring to your attention. This time we look at Vietnam vets, Arch McLeish, Indonesia, The Grabhorn Instititute, Google Maps, nature macro photography, electronic shutters, the Fall Foliage Prediction Map and Adobe's Creative Catalyst Awards.
- In War Veterans Who Have Found Peace and Healing in Vietnam, Miss Rosen presents images from In Vietnam I Fond Peace, a photo series by Rebecca Rütten. "I asked the veterans to close their eyes and remember a significant moment of the past that changed everything for them," Rütten says. "Often I waited up to five minutes until I had the feeling something in their faces changed, only then I pressed the trigger and took the portrait."
- In Arch McLeish Finds Beauty in Barren Landscapes, Rosie Flanagan showcases the London and New York photographer's image that "are almost entirely devoid of human life; though not of human presence." With a dash of humor, we might add.
- In Fires in Indonesia Blanket Islands and Cities in Smog, Alan Taylor presents 21 photos of the annual slash-and-burn effort. "Most of the blazes are illegal fires set to clear land for palm oil and pulpwood industries," he writes.
- Glenn Fleishman visits A California Type Foundry Is Keeping Vintage Printing Alive. And he took some photos at The Grabhorn Instititute in the Presidio at San Francisco where type is always hot.
- Strobist David Hobby continues his Lighting Cookbook with Google Maps as a Visa. "I have learned that there is no better entre[!] for introducing yourself into a wide variety of places and situations than to constantly be shooting photos to add to Google Maps," he writes.
- Scott Galloway lists Eight Secrets for Fascinating Nature Macro Photography on iPhone along with some stunning macro shots.
- In How Fast Is the Sony a7R IV Silent Shutter?, Jim Kasson finds a new method to test electronic shutters.
- The 2019 Fall Foliage Prediction Map has been published by Smoky Mountains. Use the slider to see what autumn will look like where you and your camera will be.
- Adobe honors Five Youth Organizations Catalyzing the Next Generation of Creative Leaders with its 2019 Creative Catalyst Awards, which includes a grant. Winners include Wide Angel Youth Media, Urban Arts Partnership, Fully Focused, Reel Youth and RYSE.
