854 Media, publisher of British Journal of Photography, has announced the winning photographers of the inaugural Female in Focus award. Two series were cited as well as 20 winning single images.

Series Winners. Priya Kambli (l) and Katinka Schuett.

The photographers whose bodies of work were awarded prizes are Priya Kambli and Katinka Schuett:

  • Kambli's series, Buttons For Eyes, explores issues of loss, memory and the photographer's hybrid cultural identity, by physically manipulating old family photographs and then rephotographing the altered artefacts.
  • Schuett's series, Cosmic Drive, questions how contradictory spheres of fantasy and hard science can be made visible.

These series and the 20 winning single images that will accompany them in the exhibition have all been captured by a multitude of diverse feminine perspectives.

Valérie Six. One of 20 single image winners.

Female in Focus will be on show at United Photo Industries gallery in 16 Main St #B, Brooklyn, N.Y., from Oct. 22 to Nov. 15. The exhibition will be open to the public from Tuesday to Saturday 12 a.m. to 6 p.m.

1854 Media, publisher of British Journal of Photography, is proud to announce the winning photographers of the inaugural Female in Focus award

Female in Focus is an award created by 1854 Media and British Journal of Photography, in collaboration with United Photo Industries, Brooklyn, N.Y., seeking to bridge photography's gender imbalance and to elevate the work and careers of female professionals across the globe.

Selected by our panel of pioneering women within the industry, the 20 single image winners will be exhibited in a group show at United Photo Industries Gallery in New York, (Oct. 22 to Nov. 15) alongside the two series winners, who will join us for the private view.

The artists behind the two winning bodies of work are Priya Kambli and Katinka Schuett. Kambli's series, Buttons For Eyes, explores issues of loss, memory and the photographer's hybrid cultural identity, by physically manipulating old family photographs and then rephotographing the altered artefacts. Schuett's series, Cosmic Drive, questions how contradictory spheres of fantasy and hard science can be made visible.
