In this recurring column, we highlight a few items we've run across that don't merit a full story of their own but are interesting enough to bring to your attention. This time we look at Sam Escobar, Sony contest, Vivek Prabhakar, Henry Ballot and Gordon Parks, the Fujifilm XF10, the Hasselblad X1D II, Tricia Buice, Mark Segal, shutter shock, a $30K contract and the CASE Act.
- Rosie Flanaghan finds A Future Already Here in Sam Escobar's photos of Puerto Escondido. We just find them amusing.
- Alan Taylor highlights a few early entries in the 2020 Sony World Photography Awards. Deadline is Jan. 7, 2020.
- In Photos Capture the 'Serenity and Chaos' of India, Ellyn Kail presents a few images by Bangalore-based photographer Vivek Prabhakar. "I feel the serenity in the chaos is what makes India so amazing -- the smells, the noise, the heat, the people, the animals," he says.
- Sérgio Burgi recounts How Photographs of Poverty in the Americas Ignited an International Battle Over Propaganda with images by Henry Ballot and Gordon Parks in the early 1960s.
- Ming Thein has produced a quick review of his new Fujifilm XF10. "Bottom line: this camera really delivers," he concludes.
- LensRental photo tech Lynn Green provides his First Impressions With the Hasselblad X1D II. Is it perfect? No. "But if you're looking for the incredible image detail that comes from the medium format platform (albeit crop medium format) and have a bit of patience with your photography, the Hasselblad X1D II is a great update to the Hasselblad mirrorless line and the price drop only makes it more enticing," he writes.
- Tricia Buice tells all in her Kelby Guest Blog. The food blogger and photographer talks gear, learning to use it and doing what she loves. Every day.
- Mark Segal experiments with Breathing Color River Stone Satin Rag. "Its uniqueness lies in its being a cotton substrate paper but coated on both sides and from my finding, printable on both sides," he notes.
- Jim Kasson tests Sony a7RIII and a7RIV Shutter Shock. And discovers a surprise he can't explain.
- Craig Oppenheimer negotiates a $30,000 contract for Product Interaction Shots for a Beverage Brand, which was about $5,000 over the agency's budget.
- In Copyright Alliance Urges Support for CASE Act, Carolyn Wright reposts the link to ask your congressional representation to support the creation of a small claims court for copyright infringements.
