In this recurring column, we highlight a few items we've run across that don't merit a full story of their own but are interesting enough to bring to your attention. This time we look at Worldwide Photo Walk winners, Andri Pol, Ming Thein, unwanted photo gifts, iPhone panoramas, a crop factor calculator and the Siena International Photo Awards.
- Scott Kelby trots out The Winners From This Year's Worldwide Photo Walk. He shows 10 finalists and the Grand Prize winner. Here's an exercise for you: crop the Grand Prize winner vertically, then compare and contrast the two compositions.
- Andri Pol Takes a Look Inside CERN's Swiss Headquarters and, fortunately for us, he took his camera to provide a rare peek inside the facility. This piece presents a few of the images from his book Inside CERN: European Organization for Nuclear Research.
- Ming Thein presents the first of a five-part series titled 20 Stories in which he tells the story behind images that remain important to him.
- Robert Baggs lists 10 Gifts Photographers Don't Want for Christmas but, really, the advice goes for birthdays and other gift-giving occasions.
- What to Do With Those iPhone Panoramas? Make Movies! suggests Derrick Story. He's mentioned this before, but he has some software advice in this column.
- Trey Piepmeier of Trey Labs has released Crop Factor to calculate crop factor, 35mm equivalent focal length, 35mm equivalent f-stop for the same blur circles and aspect ratio. Free, too.
- The Siena International Photo Awards 2020 is open for entries with an early-bird deadline of Dec. 1 and a final deadline of Jan. 5, 2020.
