In this recurring column, we highlight a few items we've run across that don't merit a full story of their own but are interesting enough to bring to your attention. This time we look at Arnaud Freitas, Diana Bagnoli, the Filter Photo Festival, a better histogram, Edmund Optics Knowledge Center, portfolio Web sites, the power of images, the Malta Intl. Photo Awards, orgadisnization and the Sigma 24-70mm f2.8 DG DN Art.

  • In Israel: A Photographic Narrative of Suspended Time, Devid Gualandris explores a new series by French photographer Arnaud Freitas. "Freitas' photographs are not planned or predicted," he writes, "they develop, instead, a mysterious, poetic atmosphere where daily life is carefully pushed aside, diverted in elusive ways."
  • Photographer Diana Bagnoli visited Coca-Cola Country in Southern Mexico to see how this "staple source of hydration" affects public health.
  • Jonathan Blaustein presents the first part of The Best Work I Saw at the Filter Photo Festival. This piece looks at work by Adam Frint, Crystal Tursich, Whitney Bradshaw, Jim Ferguson, Margaret LeJeune and Vaune Trachtman.
  • In A Better Histogram, John Sadowsky look at "three kinds of photo-histograms: (1) the gamma level histogram, which is a transformed data histogram and is by far the most common type, (2) the linear level histogram and (3) the stops histogram, which is the better histogram."
  • Edmund Optics has launched the Edmund Optics Knowledge Center featuring a library of reference material on lenses including a focal length calculator; an introduction to polarization; explanations of anti-reflection coatings, polarization, filters and more.
  • Hillary Grigonis lists The Best Photography Portfolio Web Sites for Showing Off Your Work. The list includes Wix, Adobe Portfolio, WordPress, Shopify, X3, PhotoShelter, Squarespace, SmugMug, Zenfolio, Format, 500px and Semplice.
  • Lindsay Morris explores The Power of Imagery and Shared Meaning. "For years marketers have known of the potential of images to evoke emotion and influence behavior," she writes. "The difference today is that the joy of creating has become democratized."
  • The Malta International Photo Awards are now open for submissions. With six categories, MIPA offers €54,000 in prize money with €5,000 for every first-place winner, €3,000 for every runner-up and €1,000 for every third place. Deadline is Sunday, Jan, 17 2020 at 11:59 p.m. CEST.
  • In Orgadisnization, Mike Johnston bemoans the inevitable disorganization that infects everybody. He back up his claim with two amusing stories purists would dismiss as anecdotal evidence. But, you know, that's what makes them amusing.
  • Sigma said its 24-70mm f2.8 DG DN Art will begin shipping in early December 2019 for $1,099. We've updated our story with affiliate links.

More to come! Meanwhile, please support our efforts...
