In this recurring column, we highlight a few items we've run across that don't merit a full story of their own but are interesting enough to bring to your attention. This time we look at underwater winners, Eirik Johnson, Jason Kottle, Keith Ladzinski, bokeh, Leica M lenses, 50+ Adobe apps, instant cameras, Angler collapsible softbox, copyright, Affinity Photo 1.8 and color.
- The Guardian presents the Underwater Photographer of the Year 2020 Winners with a nod to the UPY Yearbook for the details.
- In Eirik Johnson Photographs the Extreme Contrast of Summer and Winter in Alaska, Stephanie Wade highlights the Seattle photographer's intriguing series Barrow Cabins. "Seen together, both the summer and winter series are a meditation on the passage of time and the seasonal shift along the extreme horizon of the Arctic," Johnson says.
- Jason Kottle illustrates My Trip to Vietnam, Singapore, and Qatar with some mesmerizing photos. And there are more on his Instagram account.
- Andrew Gilchrist interviews Keith Ladzinski about his photo of Free Solo Climbing Star Alex Honnold Falling. Honnold was on a rope this time.
- Mike Johnston demonstrates that Bokeh Is Not a Stable Characteristic of a Lens. "It can change with aperture, focus distance, whether the blurred object are in front of or behind the plane of focus, how much blurriness there is and, especially, with what's being imaged," he writes.
- Leica's Peter Karbe discusses The Art of the Leica M Lens. "Lens construction is in itself a craft," he says. "And it takes a lot of skill and talent and understanding of the material that you use."
- All 50+ Adobe Apps Explained in 10 Minutes valiantly attempts an overview of the Adobe ecosphere:
- Daven Mathies and Hillary Grigonis team up to list The Best Instant Cameras for 2020 "from simple point-and-shoots to fully manual machines to digital-film hybrids."
- Derrick Story describes how he uses the $49 Angler Collapsible Softbox with a $160 Genaray LED panel to shoot product shots for TheFilmCameraShop.
- In Copyrights in the Era of AI, Karen Robinson asks, "Does integrating protected material in the process of training an AI model constitute infringement?" She argues it's too much of a gray area at the moment. "Setting up a more definite legal or regulatory framework for this type of activity would enable AI to continue to flourish in the United States."
- Affinity Photo 1.8 has been released as part of a suite-wide Affinity 1.8 update with enhanced Photoshop and plug-in compatibility.
- PhotoShelter is hosting Harnessing the Power of Color, a free webinar with Lindsay Adler, who will discuss "the ways you can integrate purposeful and powerful color into your photographic style." Register at the link above and tune in on Mar. 11 at 3 p.m. PDT.
