In this recurring column, we highlight a few items we've run across that don't merit a full story of their own but are interesting enough to bring to your attention. This time we look at women in media, Metallica, Laia Abril, portraits, focus stacking, camera buying, glass, fake profile pictures, Chrome OS and a one-day Blurb discount.
- B&H is Celebrating Women in Media with a series of videos of women in the fields of photography, filmmaking, technology, fine arts, and adventure travel weighing in on the significance of women's history to their lives and careers.
- Ross Halfin's best photograph was Metallica Out on the 'Ego Ramp'. "My aim when shooting a show is to give somebody something they would not normally have seen," he writes. It's unusual for the time of day (sunset) and angle of view.
- Spanish photographer Laia Abril has won the Foam Paul Huf Award 2020 for her project The History of Misogyny.
- In How to Make Money Shooting Portraits, Zach Sutton "shares why he thinks you should always test shoot, SEO tips and addresses the ever difficult issue of how to price yourself."
- Charlie Ginsburgh provides a tutorial on Focus Stacking and Its Application Within Macro Photography with some captivating examples. "My best images emerge when I slow down and allow my creative juices to flow as I execute the process," he writes.
- Mike Johnston describes How to Buy a Camera in 16 Easy Steps. By Step 8, you have the camera and the fun begins. The comments include an amusing Ansel Adams story as well.
- Kirk Tuck reveals the trick to Photographing Through Glass. We use it all the time for our sunset photos.
- In Signs You're Following a Fake Twitter Account, Nixintel focuses on profile pictures generated by This Person Does Not Exist. Nixintel looks at eye and mouth alignment, ear asymmetry, unusual eyes and teeth before reading the bio.
- Kyle Bradshaw reports Chrome OS to Get Native App for Printing and Scanning Documents. "Late last month, work began on a new "Print Management app," starting with a Chrome OS specific flag in chrome://flags," he writes. "Print Management will also include a UI for scanning documents and photos."
