Matinee: 'We Belong to Naples' Share This on LinkedIn   Tweet This   Forward This

21 March 2020

Saturday matinees long ago let us escape from the ordinary world to the island of the Swiss Family Robinson or the mutinous decks of the Bounty. Why not, we thought, escape the usual fare here with Saturday matinees of our favorite photography films?

So we're pleased to present the 336th in our series of Saturday matinees today: We Belong to Naples.

Earlier this year, Spazio Tangram Napoli organized a photo contest it called We Belong to Naples. Entries to the contest closed on March 16, with online voting open until tomorrow.

Organizers explained the theme:

The theme of this fifth photo contest, chosen by the photographer Gaetano De Angelis is We Belong to Naples: the sense of belonging to our city, the bond with the land, in a popular key, in a "Pop" perspective, that speaks mainly about the Neapolitan people, the characteristics and contradictions of its people, both from a funny/desecrating point of view, but also giving a more serious and analytical reading.

But with all public events in Naples canceled because of the coronavirus crisis, the group wasn't able to hold an exhibition. So it took the contest online, releasing this 4:46 video showing all of the 110 photographs that were entered.

They go by quickly but no so fast you can't get a sense of the city in happier times. And among these intimate portraits of a great city, there are some real prize winners you might wish you could linger on.

And you can at the contest's Facebook page, which presents the images as stills where you can vote for individual images withe a Like.

We present the short video here as a big hug to those suffering from this pandemic in all of Italy, all of Europe, all of the world. It is a reminder of all we love in this life even as we complain about it.

Salute!
