In this recurring column, we highlight a few items we've run across that don't merit a full story of their own but are interesting enough to bring to your attention. This time we look at Robin O'Neill, Michael Gessner, Francesa Tosarelli, bridge cameras, disinfecting gear and 11 support initiatives.

  • Suzanne Sease features the personal project of Robin O'Neill. "During the global state of emergency and the mandate for self-isolation and distancing, I couldn't help but turn my heart to the people still working to provide our essential services," O'Neill says. She began taking her camera with her on her necessary outings, photographing the front-line workers she encountered. Bus drives, grocery store clerks and others.
  • Berlin-based photographer Michael Gessner shares his new photo essay Deafening Silence, which captured an abandoned New York City -- in 2018. "It was never my intention to show empty cities," he tells Emily Grundon.
  • Hannah Abel-Hirsch talks to filmmaker Francesa Tosarelli On the Ethics of Documenting a Pandemic. Tosarelli's video captures the acutely ill of Bergamo "as they struggle in the confines of their homes, unable to be admitted to the hospitals, which are already overwhelmed." Images of empty street didn't tell the whole story, Tosarelli tells Abel-Hirsch. "I felt part of the story was missing and I took the time to examine how to cover it safely with the necessary protective gear and to understand what would be the right time and location."
  • Daven Mathies lists The Best Bridge Cameras for 2020. Models from Canon, Nikon, Panasonic and Sony all make the cut.
  • In How to Disinfect Camera Equipment and Spaces, Roger Cicala expands on his earlier piece on the subject with Ryan Hill and Joey Miller.
  • In Giving Back During the Covid-19 Crisis: 11 Initiatives From Photographers, Galleries, and More, Ellyn Kail lists 11 initiatives from photographers, gallerists, organizations and others to support each other during the crisis.

More to come! Meanwhile, please support our efforts...
