In this recurring column, we highlight a few items we've run across that don't merit a full story of their own but are interesting enough to bring to your attention. This time we look at photos of the week, photo firsts, PMOA's collection, Naomi Campbell, how to tell you're done and a crop factor calculator.
- Jim Powell picks Twenty Photographs of the Week for The Guardian. Some of them are stunners.
- Jessica Stewart lists the 18 Famous First Photographs in History from the oldest photo to the first photo on Instagram.
- The Philadelphia Museum of Art is celebrating National Photo Month with the 32,400 of them in its collection. "From portraits given to family and friends, to snapshots of faraway places -- photographs play a role in our lives unlike any other pictorial art form," the Museum from Home collection notes. National Photo Month has been May since 1987.
- Alex Cooke reports Supermodel Naomi Campbell Shoots Her Own Magazine Cover With Her Phone. The big news, though, is that she's turning 50. Campbell not only took the shot but she did her own hair, makeup and styling. But she's not quitting her day job.
- In Eleven Photographers on How to Finish a Body of Work, Aperture reprints a few responses from Sasha Wolf's PhotoWork: Forty Photographers on Process and Practice.
- If you know your sensor size (not always detailed in your camera's specs), mmCalc will convert the focal length and aperture of a lens to its 35mm equivalent on your camera. In this case, note that aperture refers to depth of field rather than exposure (which is not affected). Scroll down to the bottom of the page for a few more calculators (like the Custom Parameters Calculator).
