In this recurring column, we highlight a few items we've run across that don't merit a full story of their own but are interesting enough to bring to your attention. This time we look at Austin Leis, David Hockney, Jim Kasson, Harold Davis, a selfie-portrait collage, wireless flash controllers, the 120-300mm f2.8 Nikkor and Adobe's DNG SDK patch.
- Stephanie Wade finds Moments of Tranquility on the Spanish Coast in Austin Leis's images. The series features rollers in exotic locations. We may not be able to travel now, but why should our luggage suffer?
- In Hockney Invites Budding Artists to Find Joys of Spring in Lockdown, Kim Willsher quotes the artist who has been sitting in the garden of his Normandy home drawing the blossoming of spring on his iPad:
I'm 82, I'm going to die. We die because we are born. The only things that matter in life are food and love, in that order and also our little dog Ruby. I truly believe this and for me, the basis of art is love. I love life.
- Jim Kasson has released his Chronography Video, a lecture he was supposed to give at the Monterey Museum of Art before "Covid-19 intervened and I had to cancel it." Here's the 34-minute presentation with PowerPoint slides;
- Harold Davis will host Creative Black and White Webinar, Part 2: The Assignment on May 26. He's going to try something a little different this time, though. He's going to walk you through a shoot at home before showing you how he converts the captures to monochrome images.
- Illustrator and designer Kathleen Martin shows you How to Create a Selfie-Portrait Collage. "The best part of creating a collage is getting to make something totally new from the everyday things around you," she writes.
- Scott Kelby explains How to Not Get Burned by Buying the Wrong Wireless Flash Controller. The trick is to make sure the device you buy is compatible with both the camera and flash you are using. He lists a few options to get you going.
- Roger Cicala and Aaron Closz take A Peek Inside the AF-S Nikkor 120-300mm f2.8 FL ED SR VR, which turns into a teardown. The $10,000 optic is "is spectacularly good optically, particularly at the long end" and even "prime good" at 300mm.
- Adobe has released security patches for Reader, Acrobat and its DNG software development kit but it isn't clear if these vulnerabilities extended into its applications.
More to come! Meanwhile, here's a look back. And please support our efforts...
