Sony Introduces ZV-1 Vlogging Digital Camera

Sony has released a compact and versatile digital camera squarely aimed at the vlogging market

NEW YORK -- Sony has announced its ZV-1 compact digital camera built specifically for the vlogging community. Making use of the celebrated RX100 VII platform, the ZV-1 takes much of the imaging capabilities of the flagship compact camera and fits it into a purpose-built camera body for on-the-go, everyday content creators. Distinguishing itself from the RX100-series of cameras, the ZV-1, notably, features a side flip-out 3.0" touchscreen that is perfect for front-facing recording. The body has been further tweaked by trading in a viewfinder for a much-improved directional 3-capsule microphone and inclusion of a Multi Interface Shoe for attaching a variety of accessories. An external microphone can also be used via a 3.5mm port, but the updated built-in mic can be fitted with an included wind screen that will slide into the accessory shoe. Among other physical distinctions, the ZV-1 has a lighter weight design and a more prominent grip to suit one-handed use, along with a larger REC button on top and a front tally light.

Inside, the ZV-1 has some familiar imaging attributes in the form of a 20.1-megapixel 1"-type Exmor RS stacked CMOS sensor and BIONZ X image processor, with front-end LSI, which contributes to impressively fast performance along with wide-ranging sensitivity to suit working in a variety of conditions. The processing capabilities avail Real-Time Eye AF and Real-Time Tracking for quick and precise focusing and subject tracking. In terms of video specs, UHD 4K recording at 30p is supported with no recording limit to allow for longer takes and a micro-HDMI port can be used to conjunction with an external recorder or monitor if desired. Footage is also benefitted by Sony's S-Log2 and HLG picture profiles that match up with their professional cine cameras for refined color, dynamic range and detail when recording. Sony is also touting refined color science for improved skin tones and there is even a dedicated Skin Softening function.

Aside from the sensor and processor, Sony also looked to the RX100 V for optical inspiration and included the Zeiss 24-70mm-equivalent standard zoom lens, which features a bright f1.8-2.8 maximum aperture range to help isolate subject matter and perform in low-light conditions. This wide-angle to portrait-length zoom also has Optical SteadyShot image stabilization, which works in conjunction with electronic digital image stabilization and Active SteadyShot mode to produce steady footage and photos in difficult lighting.

Finally, Sony has also tweaked the camera's capabilities a bit more with some special functions specific to vlogging. Namely, there is the Product Showcase Setting, which optimizes focusing speed and transitions between a recognized face and a close-up object. There is also a Background Defocus function, which helps correctly dial-in aperture settings for creating shallow depth of field effects, the aforementioned Skin Softening function and a Face Priority Auto-Exposure setting to ensure correct exposures when on camera.

In addition to the ZV-1 Digital Camera itself, Sony has also announced a dedicated Vlogger Accessory Kit, which includes the GP-VPT2BT Wireless Shooting Grip and a 64-GB SDXC memory card to get you started on your vlogging journey.
