In this recurring column, we highlight a few items we've run across that don't merit a full story of their own but are interesting enough to bring to your attention. This time we look at an ancient mosaic, scanners, used Leicas, naive or incorrect evaluations and a self-portrait.
- In Archaeologists Excavate a Stunning Roman Mosaic That's Untarnished From an Italian Vineyard, Grace Ebert shows what you get when you dig down a bit. Myko Clelland took a few photos of the pristine find in a private vineyard in Negrar di Valpolicella.
- Hillary K. Grigonis lists The Best Photo Scanners for 2020. The Plusteks certainly should be at the top of any list rather than omitted. And what's that Kodak doing in there?
- The Phoblographer lists The Leica Digital Cameras That Will Become Classics. Pros, cons and current used prices. "Not only are these Leica digital cameras affordable, but they're also incredible performers that will help you create some truly gorgeous images," the piece promises.
- In Citius, Altius, Fortious Claims (faster, higher, stronger), Thom Hogan looks at noise, focus, color and resolution claims of superiority that, after a little forensics, prove to be entirely something else at play.
- Austin, Texas Street Photographer, Circa 2020 is a self-portrait of Kirk Tuck. You can tell he's a photographer not just from the camera (and, well, that haircut) but from the bandana. "The bandana, worn loosely around the neck, serves as a 'back-up' face mask should the need arise," he explains. Photographers always carry backups.
More to come! Meanwhile, here's a look back. And please support our efforts...
