In this recurring column, we highlight a few items we've run across that don't merit a full story of their own but are interesting enough to bring to your attention. This time we look at Jonathan Blaustein, inspiration, Mars in 4K, Serge Ramelli, the Kraszna-Krausz Book Awards, Nikon's new zoom, medium format and remote video tips.
- Jonathan Blaustein's Extinction Party, published by Yoffy Press, compiles four bodies of work on the themes of American consumption and consumerism. Gregory Eddi Jones interviews him.
- In Alternate Theories of Inspiration, Ming Thein presents a variety of dramatic monochromes. "Where do the ideas come from in the first place?" he asks.
- Grace Ebert presents The Red Planet in a New 4K Video courtesy of the Mars Rovers and some clever still compilation. Transmission rates are too slow to do a live HD broadcast, let alone 4K, but that didn't stop NASA:
- Retoucher Serge Ramelli recounts the lessons of his 15 Years of Retouching and My 'Over Retouching' Story. He learned to tone it down, so to speak.
- Hannah Abel-Hirsch announces The Shortlistees of the Kraszna-Krausz Book Awards. The 35th edition of the prize comprises two categories: the Photography Book Award and Moving Image Book Award.
- Let's have a discussion about Nikon's new 25-50mm zoom. Start with Lloyd Chambers's concerns about the Pancake Zoom and compare to Mike Johnston's enthusiasm for the Half a Normal Zoom Lens. Recalling Hogan's argument yesterday, it appears Nikon is appealing to exactly the photographers it intended to appeal to.
- Meanwhile, Kirk Tuck surveys three friends who have moved into Medium Format Digital.
- Shaun Amy lists some Considerations for Remote Instruction Using Internet-Based Technology. "In general, good quality, natural-sounding audio is far more important than video," he writes in a piece that covers the territory from corner to corner. Valuable advice for anyone communicating via video.
More to come! Meanwhile, here's a look back. And please support our efforts...
