In this recurring column, we highlight a few items we've run across that don't merit a full story of their own but are interesting enough to bring to your attention. This time we look at Iowa, dreams, birds, gardens, Stephen Wilkes, the Opteka 420-800mm lens, Olympus OM-D Webcam Beta, a cancellation policy and Tinybeans.

  • Nearly 35 percent of Iowa's corn has been destroyed by a rare inland storm known as a derecho in winds reached 140 mph. In Iowa's Farmers Count the Cost of a Rare Storm, Jordan Gale returns to his home state to survey the damage with his camera.
  • The Guardian presents portraits of Americans and Their Dreams from Canadian photographer Ian Brown's new book. It took Brown 12 years to collect the 170 portraits along with handwritten statements of what the American dream means to each of them.
  • The Bird Photographer of the Year has been announced. You can see the finalists as well. Rob Read introduces the winners:
  • Getty president Jim Cuno talks with Carolyn Peter, curatorial assistant in the Department of Photographs at the Getty Museum, about Hippolyte Bayard and on the magical nature of gardening and photographs. "Bayard placed himself in the garden for his self-portraits because natural light was a necessity for photography in the 1840s, but also because it was one of his favorite places," she says.
  • In Stephen Wilkes -- an Epic Conversation, Kevin Raber and Jeff Schewe visit Wilkes via Zoom for a four-part video interview. And all four parts are in the piece. Wilkes began his career as an assistant to Jay Maisel that led to Wilkes's shooting Jay Myself, available on OVID.tv.
  • Thom Hogan plays with a $155 Opteka 420-800mm Lens on a Nikon Z 50. The simple design has a fixed aperture that closes down with the focal length from f8.3 at 420mm to f16 at 800mm.
  • Olympus has released its free Olympus OM-D Webcam Beta for macOS Sierra to Catalina (10.12 to 10.15). The software is compatible with the Olympus OM-D E-M1X, E-M1, E-M1 Mark II, E-M1 Mark III and the E-M5 Mark II using the USB cable provided with the camera at purchase and has been tested in Mac native desktop applications OBS, Google Chrome and Zoom through Google Chrome.
  • Craig Oppenheimer negotiates A Large Production Cancelled by Covid-19. "The photographer was able to charge part of his creative fees, half of his licensing fees and all out of pocket expenses based on how our terms/conditions were worded," he writes.
  • Tinybeans is offering half off a yearly subscription to its premium photo/video sharing accounts with the code AUG2020 through the end of the month. Apply the code on the Web site only (not the app stores) to get the discount.

More to come! Meanwhile, here's a look back. And please support our efforts...
