In this recurring column, we highlight a few items we've run across that don't merit a full story of their own but are interesting enough to bring to your attention. This time we look at photomicrography, permafrost, Graciela Iturbide, Julia Fullerton-Batten, Herlinde Koelbl, the Sigma 85mm f1.4, folders, the blue hour, a Fotodiox adapter and older readers.
- Winners of Nikon's 2020 Photomicrography Competition have been announced. The Guardian published a smaller selection if you have trouble loading Nikon's page.
- The Great Thaw: Global Heating Upends Life on Arctic Permafrost features Katie Orlinksy's photos of the dramatic shift in the permafrost of Siberia and Alaska.
- In Graciela Iturbide's Photos Show the Beauty and Dreams of Mexico and Its People, Laura Beltrán Villamizar presents several of the photographer's monochromatic images. "There's so much beauty in Mexico, we often get obsessed with other countries," Iturbide says. That goes for dreams too, she adds.
- In Looking Out From Within, Liz Sales profiles London photographer Julia Fullerton-Batten who took portraits of her neighbors standing at the windows in the evening.
- Fascination of Science showcases the personal project of Herlinde Koelbl portraying the cleverest minds of our day. The monochrome portraits have captions of a sort: something scribbled on each person's opened palm.
- Kirk Tuck gets his hands on the Sigma 85mm f1.4 DG DN Art Lens and takes a walk shooting f2.0 all day. "I am very happy with the performance of the lens and can't wait to use it for a night shoot coming up on Wednesday," he writes.
- Julieanne Kost lists 15 Tips for Working With Folders in Lightroom Classic.
- In Blue Hour, Dave Williams takes a deep dive into the twilight zone.
- Jim Kasson mounts a Sony 135 Mm STF on GFX 50R with a Fotodiox Sony A to GFX adapter. "I think this is great news!" he writes.
- Mike Johnston celebrates Older Readers. "I like the company of people who know more than I do," he writes. Around here, we aren't so discriminating.
More to come! Meanwhile, here's a look five years back. And please support our efforts...
