Matinee: 'Scotiabank Christmas' Share This on LinkedIn   Tweet This   Forward This

19 December 2020

Saturday matinees long ago let us escape from the ordinary world to the island of the Swiss Family Robinson or the mutinous decks of the Bounty. Why not, we thought, escape the usual fare here with Saturday matinees of our favorite photography films?

So we're pleased to present the 375th in our series of Saturday matinees today: Scotiabank Christmas.

This is the last matinee we will be presenting before Christmas and, if you've been following us for a while, you know we like to embrace the theme. You might think it's particularly tough to embrace anything during the pandemic, but much remains in our grasp.

We've featured some fun videos in Christmases past, our favorites among which are ads for various commercial ventures. Instead of Christmas is for shopping, they tend to dunk the shopping in Christmas.

And this year, we've found something in that tradition. It dunks the pandemic in Christmas.

This 30-second soap opera depicts the presentation of a gift by the boyfriend wearing a traditional Ugly Christmas Sweater to his girlfriend who is religious about observing pandemic protocols.

It's an innocuous ad for Scotiabank, Canada's third largest chartered bank. In the sense that it isn't pushing any particular product. Just a brand wishing you the best.

And pointing out that, pandemic or not, lockdown or not, life (in general) goes on. People become engaged, children are born, parents turn into grandparents, anniversaries are marked, birthdays are not delayed, the sun rises, the sun sets.
